https://dbader.org/python-mastery ► Get in the right mindset for mastering Python and see how to make continuous progress
In this video I’m going to reply to a question that I got from Madey on Twitter: “For someone who wants to learn to code but has absolutely no knowledge on coding where should I start?”
To figure out the best way for you to learn how to program from scratch it’s a good idea to think about why you want to learn coding in the first place. Becoming a professional developer is a long journey that takes a lot of motivation in order to make it through. If you can find out what motivates you to dive into computer science and to learn how to code your chance of success is much higher.
I believe that with any skill you want to learn, whether that’s Python, any other programming language, playing the guitar, or carpentry—it makes sense to start with the “WHY” first. Why are you getting into this field? What’s the goal that’s going to keep you motivated when you’re making it through the tough days and weeks when you’re figuring things out as a complete beginner?
In the video I also go a little bit into how I became a software developer, what attracted me to this profession and how I eventually made a career out of it.
This video won’t lay out the process for learning programming for beginners, but I hope it’ll show you what the right mindset is for starting out and eventually becoming a programmer.

Very good and motivating video.
I started learning Python without any target problem. I just felt very enthusiastic about learning something new and hard, and I new that programmers are in demand, so I googled about which language is good for beginners and landed on Python. At first I had no idea what to do with programming, but after few tutorials about simple numerical operations, variables, if/else statements and booleans I started to get so many ideas that I wanted to do. So basically the knowledge about some basic stuff got me so hooked that I had to stop everything else, because I found so many small programs and tools that I wanted to write – time-code calculator, compound interest calculator and command line game "Mastermind" (computer gives you randomly 5 colors and you have guess those colors). I was actually really proud of that game and I remember playing it few weekends with paper and colored pencils.
So basically what I wanted to say is that if you are beginner, you probably don't even know what you can do with coding and that's OK. It is enough if you just have enthusiasm about it.
this is the worst
I came here to know where to go in order to learn coding! I didn't come here so that I could listen to a damn broken record! I'm mad now.
Im 42 is it to late for me to have a career in coding
Great video Dan! Really good for a new coder to know before starting!
I had to thumbs down this video because my word, 12 minutes and no answer. "maybe start with python" was the closest thing to an answer you will get.
Figure out what is your motive. that's a great advice.
I started as Batch and its not really codeing but I know HTML 🙂
good one. so modest. love this guy.
This is great! Thank you!
Great video, thank you.
My google assistant brought me here 🙂
Thank you
Good advises
i want to make a sequel of undetale i have the same talents as toby fox only i dont know if hes going to make undertale 2 so yeah….. ill hope for the best because i dont have a development team… and this project im going to work on is going to be pretty big its going to take like 3 or 4 years but ill get started on programming
If you want to learn Russian and programming in C / C ++ & Assembler, I will be glad to your letter.
Thank you
This was an absolute abysmal video. I expected material to be stretched out like a high school essay with a minimum word count, but I also expected an answer. Ugh
Thanks bro great advise
hii python, this video is not helpful for me …..after watching 80% video i m thinking that what is this!!!!!
and at the end , u just say that beginners should be start from python language …..why …because u just love it ???
I AM NOT ASKING WHY SHOULD I LEARN TO PROGRAM, BUT What should I learn first to be better at learning programming….thumbs down sorry,
I do not need to ask why, I know why, i have spent many months needing to figure out what to career into, and this was the only one that answered 7 of my 10 questions and goals as a yes i need to learn this and do it.
So since I have a basic idea and would like to learn more, where do i start…..your video is just excitement about people asking to learn, So point them WHERE, to learn this stuff… gosh not that hard.
1 why to learn
2 what to learn
3 how to learn
Ineedyourhelpplzz
Very helpful thank you so much.
Ya I want to learn coding so I can make like mods to games. Like auto clickers, AI to play the game for me, and pretty reprogram games to do a certain thing. I just want to learn for recreational use such as doing it in my free time. I think it would just be a skill that will be good to use. Like am trying to learn french for again, recreational use.
8 minutes in and still no answer. Awesome.
Im a 14 y/o boy who wants to do Coding and Programming as a job in the future and want to start now, what do i use? what programs? any tips? please comment so i can see
I want to learn to code for the love of story telling in video games and also fascinated with AI.
I have never seen a more helpful video in my entire life. I now want to be a carpenter. 100,000 likes for this inspirational beast that has taught me so many life lessons
I don’t know what you’re say
this video should not appear in search results
Nice analogies man. Thanks
Thanks very helpfull as a motivational speach ha ha but then I didn't expect to code from a Y-tube tutorial in one sitting.. I've seen the inovation of technology from scratch (binary GOTO shit) so have a weird long term nerdy interest and understanding of the area. I also was good at math and science at school.. The best advice I can give is buy all old tech and strip it look at the parts and go back to the basic physics and enginearing principles of how it works like a clock work engine I have old clocks and valve thech devices that are facinating to learn about…n Especially important is knowing about conductors (metal and how they are christal in structure and pass electrons) Simon
Yo have had a lot of trolls on the comments here mate I think you are dead on. Keep going you know your stuff and people like you are the future of proggramming and tech from AI to the basics… Keek going freind..
What if I want to make people smile with whatever I program/code like The now deceased president of Nintendo Satoru Iwata
U did not even say the answer to the title of this video
why tf dont you just show us instead of just telling us you bitch
his ears be making him look like an elf dude like wtf he sucks he dosent even show you an example! just "bscssdjbblablabkabsjdjgcjsajsag do this! you need this blablablamqkjdjbhj!!!!" like just shut tf up
I have a problem that I dont have any idea why i'm learning code and why did I pick Information Technology as my major, i'm so lost and dont know where to go. but I really want to success do something
So many people answer around the question they themselves pose. Smh
JUST ANSWER THE FN QUESTION
bla bla bla bla 6 minute of bla bla bla
this was uploaded on my bday 2 years ago
I know your not responsible for me or any of that shit, but god am i FUCK tired of the same non answers for years.
I, am a DUMBfuck. and you spouting gob shite for twelve minutes doesn't help ANYONE.
how you gonna TELL people that they should be motivated by X for a quarter of an hour and label that as "where do i start."
no SHIT sherlock that anyone asking that question does, in fact, want to learn coding.
ok, i'm sorry, rant over. its not you. its literally me.
FUCK
Misleading title. Find another video
He did answer it. He cant give a definitive answer unless he knows WHY and WHAT they want to code. You cant tell a person who wants to learn to make an fps game in roblox to start with html or java. But you could tell someone who wants to make software for cars and stuff to start with java. Etc etc
He spoke about the WHY the whole time (which is important) but I came here understanding my WHY I want to know WHERE to start. I know nothing, the title is misleading.
You look so much like Benedict Cumberbatch
Loved this video, it helped me get back into coding. Definite sub.
yiou just fucked my 12 minutes
I would like to know how to create script mods and custom animations for The Sims, but I don't really know where to start.
omg you are very very talkative just say the shit answer you do not need to talk 12 mins
Very nice tips, and the fact that you dont push others to follow your way and just give them options to choose their own way is really cool. Thumbs up 👍
Revenge…..I want to code because I want to screw those that screwed me.
Really I think ypu like to hear yourself talk .I thought you were going to show us some coding now bore me to death.
Useless video man, listened at 2x still consider this a time waste, sorry mate
that helped. Please expand.
So what's your answer? I thought this would be helpful
Timestamp please
Hi. 🙂 I just started studying psychology this year. Last year i got into business school just to waste time until the beginning of my education. One of the subjects was informationtechnology, and never did i ever expect that something i just thought about quitting – actually became an interest. Ever since i started studying psychology, i just couldn't get the subject out of my mind. I don't know anything about IT, other than that i've already studied, but i love going through my old assignments etc. and there's just something deep within that calls me to study software development instead.. Should i forget about my interest? Is my feelings towards it a good and sincere motivation? I'm feeling stuck 🙁 And i'm a woman, there's only 1% studying IT in the country i live in.. Thank you
I was looking for an actual answer. Like Start by reading a book, start with this or that website, start with these youtube channels or videos, maybe that free or paid course. I keep jumping from books to lecture material from my friends to website tutorials and videos, so i'm trying to find a good spot to stick to and start in an organized way.
I hope someone is able to guide me.
The question was, "how to start coding for an absolute beginner ?" I cannot stand videos where they do not answer the question and go on and on and on about some other stuff…
Cumberbatch,! got you!!!
Benedict Coderbatch
bro i just wanted an answer tf
The only reason I saw the entire video was because I KEPT WAITING FOR YOU TO ANSWER THE MAIN QUESTION……But you never did……Such a waste of my time. You at 11:40 said " I KNOW I GAVE A RAMBLY ANSWER", trust me when I am saying you did not even do that.
am 12 and trying to learn coding you started in 7???!!!!!
He needs a software update… 6:05
That "answer" could've been 2 seconds long. "I don't know."
Sup Dan
"Hey man, how do you start coding?"
"Well, if you break it down and really do some introspective realization, you will be able to KNOW you can START coding in a week or two"
"uhhhhh"
"Start with a spreadsheet"
"uhhhhh"
"start with python"
"Okay, yeah I can do that. Got it, now what"
"More introspective realization"
"RAAAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH"
Hi, loved how you started at 7, would you be interested in sharing with my coding children community?
Horrible video . Did you even answer the question ? Or just talk about a bunch of bs that the viewers didn’t come here to hear .
i'd love to learn coding but the main reason that i want to learn coding is that i'm living in a country where living is really hard so i want to learn a skill so i can get out of this country bcs when u have a useful skill leaving this country is 50% easier.
Hey Dan love the broad strokes, and I am presuming you are saying Python is a good way to go? Esp. for those with commercial agendas? But could you give some examples of problems that might need solving today? Would editing CSS stylesheets be an example? But where. Wouldn't that be only possible in an open source software? And even that would be very hard for a beginner right? Automation in Mac? Or is that called scripting? Something else? Speaking for myself I am looking for a few tangible ideas to immediately start on. Also would you advice some one who is much older to take up programming as a potential career? Thanks again.
Slytherin CS Graduate
Mindset and realistic goals are exactly what I needed. Thanks !
WASTE OF TIME!
🐀🐀🐀🐀🐀
Is Java script harder to learn ?
I am 14 😄 and interesting in coding but don't know any thing about coding . I have a grasshopper app 🦗 to learn coding but didn't understood a thing.I also have lots of studies but this video is really helpful for me and now I think maybe I should try in future .
Thanks 😌 .
I would like to code because I love to make video games and to upgrade myself to bring value to the market and to learn a new skill 🙂
Thank you!
i was looking to spend a lot of money you just saved me and motivated me. thank you man that was a motivating speech.
Thats all very interesting however I already know what my motivation is. You didn't answer the question… What do I actually start with? Im sitting down ready to study but study what? Where do I start? It's a simple question but you spent 12.29 mins ranting on.
You have given us some important things to have in mind when starting. However, you did not actually answer the question of where or how we should start.
i want to work under discord
soo i wanna start coding and learn what to do
meh im too dum to get it anyways but it was helpful
Go straight to the point dude?
um – where would you start like – books or a particular course, even a language of some sort
i was here to seek for specific answer but whole 12 mins was…. nothing.
Very helpful video for us
In summary his advice on learning to code is to be thoughtful in your approach
Motivation: "What the SHET is RigidBody! Why isn't it working!"
i like his mom
Hi! I am new here and based on the comments in this page, I know I am in a good place. Thank you for creating this channel. As an absolute beginner in Python, kindly send me a list of links that are in an ordered sequence so that I do not have to jump from one video to another while missing the basic concepts. Thanks 🙂
Waste. Answer, no bshit
People saying here is that he didnt answer the question . Surely, he didnt ACTUALLY answer the question BUT theres always some knowledge for those who seek , plus coding is never so easy to start so he knows that there must be a mindset behind WHY DO I WANT TO CODE and its true , you should know why you want to …. So know why do you want to learn coding , get some motivation , make a mindset , get things clear , say yourself i m brave enough to start it no matter from where , and start it ,,,,, or else ( without motivation) ., you will be like I AM NOT A CODER PERSON!!!!!!!
Thank you very much for your fantastic motivation and advice. Listening to your professional and likable talks is a pleasure! I am lecturer and researcher at a German University of Applied Sciences and teach environmental scientists Python. It is a second semester course of the Environment and Energy bachelors program. We use our Python skills later in environmental physics, geodata management as well as environmental monitoring with DIY sensor networks.
I will definitely recommend your 'how to get started' video to my students.
I am wondering whether you couldn't produce a similar footage on motivating Python in environmental sciences to gain deeper understanding about our precious blue planet as well as global change. That would be a great contribution to promote education for sustainable development.
Didn't know Dejan Knez did Python videos
Why is this vid all talk
Want to learn Python for many reasons. Interested in programming, do something worth doing, of cause find a job, maybe as a freelancer and surely you can work from everywhere if you have a computer and internet. I got hooked by Python because of its wide range of opportunities and relatively simple syntax. All kinds of Tutorials the web drowns in aren´t so helpful to get really skilled. You learn how to install Python and an Editor, like Anaconda with Jupiter Notebook or Visual Studio Code, etc., a few basic topics, and that's it. Most courses I found are way too expensive and who knows if you after all get what you want or just paid for a worthless certificate. What is the best way to learn python really good? Which Books, online courses are advisable? I´m thankful for each hint! Best Regards
Thank you so much Dan,
Here I tried to put your answer into a list of points.
1. Figureout why you need to learn Python or coding.
• Because it is cool
• Needed in your job
• To earn
2. Do it in a way which motivates you
• What motivates you
3. Set small goals
• Start by trying to solve little problems
• How do I solve this problems?
4. Search for missing links, educate yourself step by step
5. If you are learning to get a job from your knowledge
• Think about investing for your education
• But at first go as far as you can, with free materials
The answer resonated with me, as I am also in a similar situation.
